Merhaba Turkiye!

1st-11th december 2009.

Day 1- singapore to istanbul
whole of day 1 was spent on the 12 hour plane flight. somehow, it didn't felt long, i slept through most of it. :)

Day 2- istanbul to bursa
upon arrival, we saw the only remains of Hippodrome of Constantinople, consisting of 3 monumental columns and a fountain. This was the site where chariot races took place in the past.

Photobucket
we then walked over to the Blue Mosque, also known as Mosque of Sultan Ahmet.Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
we then visited the Tokapi Palace, once the seat of the Ottoman Empire. now, it is a museum palace with a wide collection of treasures. Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
after that was lunch. lunch was practically the same every single day. pita bread with kebabs. how boorrriinng, and it doesn't taste very very very good too.
Photobucket
we took a ferry from Eskihisar to Topcular after lunch. short ride, freezing cold, many seagulls.
Photobucket
we visited the Grand Mosque, one of the examples of Ottoman architecture. the mosque has an interior fountain and a classic wooden pulpit.
Photobucket
just next to it was the silk market. love how the stalls display their scarfs.
Photobucket

Photobucket
then it was back to our hotel. one night stay in Bursa.

Day 3- bursa to kusadasi
woke up and saw this beautiful view from our hotel's balcony.
Photobucket
went to the Uludag Winter Sports and Ski Centre, one of the most popular ski resorts in turkey. but because, it wasn't cold enough, there wasn't snow, how disappointing. we only took the cable up and down. it was freaking cold, wore like 3-4 layers.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
came down the mountain and took a drive through the countryside to kusadasi. stop over for lunch at one the best meatball restaurants- kofteci ramiz.
Photobucket
stop over at this shop selling turkish delights. we bought back one box of them, as well as apple tea! :) my favourite. well, it's just apple juice heated up.
Photobucket

Day 4- kusadasi to sulcuk to pamukkale
visited a leather jacket outlet, apparently there are famous for their silk leather. one jacket was selling for like 1500 bucks. they do exports to hugo boss and the other big brands, and it costs about 4000 bucks there. so crazy man. i was forced to "volunteer" to model the jacket.
Photobucket
set off for selcuk where we visited the house of virgin mary. virgin mary and st john were said to have lived in ephesus and died there.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
next we explored Ephesus, one of the largest archaeological sites in existence. i enjoyed this the most throughout the whole trip. the whole city was made out of marbles.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
that was their toilets!!! so cute and funny.
Photobucket
their library, so beautiful. the funny thing was, the brothel was just opposite.
Photobucket
that was their stadium. it was so huge... Photobucket
had lunch at some random hotel and continued our bus journey to pamukkale. we stayed over for a night.

Day 5- pamukkale to konya to cappadocia
visited the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis and explore Cotton Castle, made up of white terraces and pools created by calcareous hot spring waters flowing down the mountain.
Photobucket

Photobucket
the weather was freezing, so it was a treat for us to soak our feet in the waters. i just hope it was a little more warm! :)
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
from pamukkale, we travelled to cappadocia via konya. had our usual boring lunch at one of the small restaurants along our journey. visited a 13th century Sultan Caravanserai, which was a free hotel for ancient traders and travellers.
Photobucket

Day 6- cappadocia
woke up at 5am in the morning and took a 30 minute bus ride for... our HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE! this was an optional tour, and the ticket cost $400 US per person. freaking expensive, but my dad said that it was an once in a lifetime experience, and we all had to go. i couldn't believe that i actually had second thoughts about going up the balloon due to the cold weather. i'm glad went. we got to see how a hot air balloon is set up and kept, it requires lots of manpower though.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
there was only one pilot and approximately 20 people in one basket. we had to stand throughout the 1.5 hour ride, there were no seats. the pilot was consistently holding on to the pump to pump more gas whenever he wanted the balloon to fly higher. he cannot control where he wants to go, he can only turn the balloon clockwise or anti, via pulling the strings. pilot was kind enough to let wen wen try. :)
Photobucket
we were so lucky that the weather was fine. i have heard of people signing up for hot air balloon tours and not being able to ride them due to poor weather conditions that day.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
see how the men had to use their weights to stop the balloon from flying. i really enjoyed the landing and keeping of balloon experience.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
all of us had a certificate and there was a mini champagne celebration after that! haha.
Photobucket
we headed back to the hotel, had breakfast, met up with our remaining group members and we went to visit the three sisters. well, it's basically just rocks. haha! cappadocia's landscape is full of bizarrely shaped pillars, cones and "fairy chimneys".
Photobucket
next up was a carpet manufacturing place. we were shown how do they obtain the colour dyes, getting the silk from cocoons, and how to they weave the carpet manually. haha, mummy learnt a few tricks from the lady too!
Photobucket

Photobucket
and last but not least, a mini exhibition of the different variety of carpets.
Photobucket
and papa bought a mini one for his own study. :) the one on the left.
Photobucket
pretty fruit trees! :)
Photobucket
next was to the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a compound comprising 29 rock-cut churches, including some that date back to the 6th century. Many are decorated with frescoes depicting biblical stories.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
we also had turkish ice cream. it beats the one at clarke quay hands down. haha! very tasty, but i felt that the goat milk smell in it was too strong.
Photobucket
we then had lunch at a cave restaurant. okay, that lunch was different from other lunches. no meatballs and stuff. instead, we had spaghetti and fish. it was very nice! best meal in turkey.
Photobucket

Photobucket
after lunch we visited the Underground City of Kaymakli, one of the largest underground cities in turkey, said to have existed since the Hittie period. we saw bedrooms, kitchens, dining halls, wine cellars, chapels, stables, etc.
Photobucket

Photobucket
headed back to the hotel after that. due to the winter weather, everything turns dark at 4. we mainly spend our night in the hotel playing cards. :)

Day 7- Cappadocia to ankara to bolu
after breakfast, we visited this turquoise outlet. super boring, hence no photos! we then departed for Ankara, the capital of turkey. We had lunch at an old train station, it was the usual not nice lunch. we then visited the Ataturk Mausoleum, the final resting place of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who was regarded as the father of Modern Turkey. The Mausoleum features a mix of different architectural styles from various Anatolian civilizations.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
that was the only visit for the day, the rest of the day was spent on the bus. proceeded to bolu for our overnight stay.

Day 8- bolu to istanbul
when we reached istanbul, we visited the Hagia Sophia Museum. originally it was a church, then the muslims changed it into a mosque and use plaster to cover up the beautiful mosaics.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
after lunch, we headed off to the Grand Bazaar, a maze of over 4,000 stalls and shops selling leather goods, jewellery, handicrafts, ceramics, and other local products.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
thereafter, we headed off to the hotel, changed and got ready for a dinner cum belly and folk dance performance. the belly dancers were so good, we saw one of the best dancers in turkey.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Day 9- istanbul
today was a free leisure day. my family spent almost the whole day shopping at taxim square. shopping was very good that day. winter wear was so cheap. bought a new jacket winter jacket! :) mango had a 50% sale, it was wayyy better than singapore's. more variety and cheaper.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
lunch was at esmer, one of the restaurants along taxim. the food there was very good, more to the western side and not the turkish side. no meatballs and kebabs, it was pastas and bbq chicken!
Photobucket

Photobucket
we only arrived at the hotel around 5pm. my aunt and mummy decided to stay in the hotel for maggi mee dinner, while the rest of us went to search for mac donalds. and guess what, they do not have my favourite fish filet burger!

Day 10- istanbul
visited the spice market in the morning. it was somewhat similar to the grand bazaar, just that this also sell dried and fresh food. the shop keepers there were really funny, always disturbing their guests. one shopkeeper told my mum that he wanted to marry me! despite being a joke, it was scary man. another shopkeeper gave my dad and sister his card, and ask them to visit his stall again. and guess what was on his card.... it was an orange card, and the two words "MY CARD" was written on it. super funny.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
thereafter, we took the Bosphorus cruise. it was quite a cool experience as we were cruising between 2 continents, Asia and Europe. :) love those houses along the river, very pretty. but i still think that sydney is nicer.
Photobucket

Photobucket
the cruise ride ended at some place, can't remember the name already. it was nice, rows of restaurants and a famous ice cream parlour MADO. :)
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
saw some old men doing fishing... :)
Photobucket
after that, we went to one of the largest shopping mall in istanbul. well, most of the shops are what we saw in taxim, hence, no buys. we had a KFC dinner there before leaving for the airport.

Day 11- istanbul to singapore
this plane flight back was better- slept more.

main things i have learnt from this trip:
1. 99% of the population in turkey are muslims. they are very different from the muslims in south east asia, more open i guess? i hardly see any women wearing tudongs. no offence to anyone, just stating what i saw. :)
2. they are not angmohs, they are turks!
3. turkey is huge, larger then countries such as finland, italy, etc. check the world map.
4. turkey is the only country that has 2 continents in it. how cool is that. asia and europe!

thank you papa and mummy for this wonderful turkey trip! :)
